Computer technology has become an integral part of our daily lives today. Our children use digital media for entertainment and communication. As a school, we feel that we have the responsibility to teach our students how to use digital media appropriately and with academic purpose.
The Information Technology Department:
Mr. Alex Suero is the Head of the Information Technology Department at GIS and manages and supports the technology infrastructure at our school. This entails updating and maintaining the school’s network, server, iPads, Smart Boards and projectors, and Chromebooks. In addition, the IT Department assists students and staff with their devices, regular assistance with our BYOD to school classes, and external devices such as, Apple TV and printers. The IT Department also monitors the safety of internet use by implementing internet safety measures through our school network.
Lower School Technology:
Students are introduced to technology gradually starting in first grade and progressively learn to use various technology in more in depth ways as they reach fourth grade. Technology use is integrated into daily lessons through content area subjects, but no formal technology classes are taught. Smart Boards are in every classroom from ES to 4th grade. Students in grades 1st to 4th also use iPads during their lessons to use programs such as, Power Point, educational apps, and conduct internet research. Additionally, teachers in grades 2nd to 4th have Chromebooks in their classrooms that further support the technology development of students and enhance lessons.
Middle & Upper School Technology:
In the middle school, students expand upon the knowledge and practice they received in the LS as technology education becomes more in-depth as students receive a weekly technology class in fifth grade. Additionally, Smart Boards are in every 5th to 12th grade classroom and all students have access to the upper school iPad cart.
Beginning with grade 9, students BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) to classes. Currently students in grade 9 and 10 BYOD. Students in these classes transition from the traditional teaching and learning model to modified electronic learning. Meaning that, students use their preferred device to take notes, create presentations, conduct research, and use online educational materials such as, online textbooks. Students still have certain materials that are “hard copies”, but predominately use technology in this blended learning approach.
