Our School

Head of School Welcome

Welcome to the website of German International School New York (GIS)!

I invite you to learn about the outstanding education our school can offer your children from nursery school to grade 12.

GIS is part of a network of 140 German international schools abroad and is recognized by the Permanent Conference of the Department of Education of the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and the New York State Department of Education.  In 2009, the school received the award “Excellent German School Abroad”.

Since the school was founded in 1980, we have developed into a diverse campus with German, American and international students. Our bilingual approach helps our students develop into global citizens. Our success is evident in that our graduates are accepted to highly competitive colleges and universities worldwide.

The advantage of a bilingual program at a German international school in America is simply that it affords our students enriched academic development and far-reaching cultural exposure, teaches them tolerance and helps them grow into global citizens. Our students begin in nursery school and/or Kindergarten in a dual immersion program, German and English, with a team of two teachers that follow the principle “one person – one language”. Two teachers, one native English speaker and one native German speaker, work in tandem.

In our Lower School, emphasis is placed on the German language especially in written form.  English is taught in three levels as a core subject by native English speaking teachers (beginner, intermediate, and advanced).  In order to prepare the students for the German international exit exams and the NYS High School diploma, in our middle school (gr. 5 – 9) and our high school (gr. 10 – 12) various subjects are taught bilingually or in English.

Our highly qualified faculty values a rigorous academic curriculum. Our curriculum is based on German curricula with an international orientation especially in subjects such as math and the sciences as well as foreign languages (German, English, French, Spanish and Latin).

Our students flourish in bright, sunny classrooms and our campus is inviting and green.  Our athletic facility is excellent and our students benefit from a healthy and nutritious lunch program.

Through a diverse program, excellent quality and a resounding concept, we prepare our students for a promising future.
